Chem-E Car Competition

In 2006, AIChE’s Board of Directors instituted new policies that affect student chapters participating in AIChE’s national and regional Chem-E-Car Competitions. Student teams and their advisors will be asked to demonstrate a commitment to safety awareness, safety planning, and safe practices as a standard component of their Car Competition participation, and through several measures.

Registration information

Teams competing at Southern Regional Conference must register their team and submit their abstract by the **Deadline Monday, March 9th at 5 p.m. Central Time** There is no fee associated with entering the competition. The abstract should be submitted via email along with the completed registration form using the following instructions:

  • Abstracts must be submitted in an email attachment as Word-compatible documents (.doc, .docx, or .rtf)
  • Registration forms must be submitted in an email attachment (Excel File – See Link Below)
  • These should be submitted to the Car Competition Chair, Todd Bell bell005@bama.ua.edu.
  • The email subject line must read: “SRC Chem-E Car Registration” “University Name”

JSA
Teams competing at the Southern Regional Conference must submit their job safety analysis (JSA) forms by the **Deadline Friday, March 25th at 12 p.m. Central Time** using the following instructions:

  • Complete the JSA with requested advisor signatures and submit electronic copies only by the deadline, March 25th.
  • These should be submitted via email to the regional safety coordinator Dr. Alan Lane ALANE@eng.ua.edu and to James Hill jhill1@eng.ua.edu.
  •  The email subject line must read: “SRC Chem-E Car JSA” “Car Name” “University Name”.

Additionally, competing chapters must have satisfactorily completed an AIChE-sponsored Chem-E Car safety training workshop. If your school’s training status is not up to date, the team faculty advisor will have to participate in an AIChE-sponsored safety training teleconference before being approved to compete.

CHEMICALS
Chemicals should be shipped directly from the manufacturer. If a team has special circumstances and needs to ship directly from the competing school they should contact James Hill in advance for approval. These teams are required to follow all DOT regulations for shipping.

The following chemicals will be provided:

- Hydrochloric acid (concentrated) for dilution
- Sodium hydroxide (10.0 M) for dilution
- Household vinegar solution
- Household baking soda
- Hydrogen*

*The hydrogen tank setup will be similar to that provided at the 2008 SRC. Exact fitting specifications will be posted shortly.

Standard laboratory glassware, balances, and personal protective equipment will be provided for mixing of chemical solutions. Teams may bring their own materials.
